When Joan’s father falls ill, she comes home to help him. Joan and Peter, her father’s assistant, date and a gossip column mention convinces her father that they’re in love. To please him, Joan and Peter marry “in name only,” planning to divorce when he dies. After her father’s death, Joan (who loves Peter) fears Peter will return to his old girlfriend Eunice. But Peter admits he loves Joan, and they stay married.
