LEGO Collecting Terms Explained

By Alexis Pratsides, FounderUpdated

LEGO is one of the fastest-growing collectible markets, with retired sets regularly appreciating 10-20% annually. But the hobby has a dense vocabulary of abbreviations and jargon. This glossary covers everything from condition terminology to the economics of retired LEGO sets. Track your LEGO collection at CollectionPlnr.

A

AFO (Adult Fan of LEGO)
A self-descriptor used by adult collectors and builders - distinguishing serious collectors from children who play with sets. The AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) and AFO communities are active online and at conventions such as BrickCon and BrickWorld.
ADP (Awaiting Delivery / Price)
A community abbreviation used when a set has been announced or spotted but official pricing or a release date has not yet been confirmed by LEGO.

B

BAM (Build a Minifigure)
A LEGO retail store station where customers can assemble custom minifigures from available parts at a fixed price per figure. BAM parts change periodically and some exclusive BAM parts become collectible.
BL (BrickLink)
BrickLink.com is the largest secondary marketplace for LEGO sets, parts, and minifigures. BrickLink price data is the standard reference for part-out value calculations and completed set pricing.
Bonus Set / GWP (Gift With Purchase)
See GWP below. Bonus sets are free sets offered by LEGO when a customer spends a qualifying amount. They are produced in limited quantities tied to promotional periods and can appreciate significantly once the promotion ends.
Brick Separator
A small LEGO tool included in many sets to help prise apart tightly connected bricks. Brick separators are minor collectibles in their own right, as vintage versions differ in colour from current ones.
BST (Buy/Sell/Trade)
The section of LEGO forums and subreddits where members list sets and parts for direct sale or trade with other collectors, outside of eBay or BrickLink.

C

CMF (Collectible Minifigure)
LEGO's blind-bag minifigure series, released in numbered series and themed on properties such as Harry Potter, Disney, or original LEGO characters. Each CMF pack is sold sealed, making rare figures a mystery until opened. CMFs are a significant collecting niche within LEGO.
Complete / CIB (Complete in Box)
A LEGO set that includes all original parts, instructions, sticker sheet, and box. CIB sets in good condition command the highest resale prices on the secondary market.

D

D2C (Direct to Consumer)
LEGO sets sold exclusively through LEGO's own retail stores and LEGO.com, not through third-party retailers. D2C sets include many large UCS and Icons sets and are often the first to sell out after retirement, driving secondary-market premiums.
Display Stand
A clear or coloured LEGO-compatible stand (often from third-party brands) used to elevate or angle sets for display. Common for vehicles and spacecraft that do not stand flat.

E

EOL (End of Life)
The point at which LEGO officially discontinues a set. EOL is often announced internally months before retail stock is exhausted. Collectors watch for EOL signals to buy sets before retirement drives prices up.

G

GWP (Gift With Purchase)
A free LEGO set given when a customer spends above a threshold, usually at LEGO.com or LEGO retail stores. GWPs are exclusive to the promotional period, produced in limited quantities, and often appreciate significantly after the promotion ends. Some GWPs become among the most sought-after small sets in the hobby.

H

Hard to Find (HTF)
A set or minifigure that is no longer in production and difficult to source on the secondary market, either due to small original print runs or high collector demand. HTF is a weaker designation than "retired" - it often applies to regional releases or recent EOL sets.

I

Icons
LEGO's premium adult-targeted product line (formerly called "Creator Expert" before the rebrand). Icons sets include the Eiffel Tower, Rivendell, Concorde, and botanical sets. Icons sets are popular with adult collectors and tend to hold or grow in value after retirement.

M

Minifig / Minifigure
The iconic small LEGO figures with a standard blocky body, movable arms and legs, and detachable head and hat. Rare, exclusive, or variant minifigures are major collectibles in their own right. Some individual minifigures from retired sets sell for hundreds of pounds on the secondary market.
MISB (Mint in Sealed Box)
A LEGO set in perfect condition in its original, factory-sealed box with all original shrink wrap or tape intact. MISB is the gold standard for investment-grade LEGO collecting, commanding a premium over merely sealed or opened-but-complete sets.
MOC (My Own Creation)
A custom LEGO build designed entirely by the builder rather than following an official LEGO instruction manual. MOCs are a significant part of the AFOL community, and talented MOC builders sometimes publish their designs for others to build.

N

NISB (New in Sealed Box)
Similar to MISB but with a slightly less strict implication - the set is new and sealed but may have minor box wear. Some sellers distinguish MISB (truly mint) from NISB (sealed but with shelf wear).

P

PAB (Pick a Brick)
LEGO's service allowing customers to buy individual bricks in bulk, available in LEGO stores and online. PAB is used by MOC builders and completionists replacing lost parts. Some limited PAB colours become collectible when discontinued.
Part-Out Value
The aggregate value of selling every individual LEGO part from a set separately on BrickLink, rather than selling the complete set. Part-out value sometimes exceeds the sealed set price, making it profitable to "part out" a set. BrickLink's price guide calculates this automatically.
Polybag
A small LEGO set sold in a clear plastic bag rather than a box, usually containing 50-200 parts. Polybags are often promotional or retail exclusives. Sealed polybags from retired promotions can appreciate significantly.

R

Retired
A LEGO set that has been permanently discontinued and will never be produced again. Retired sets are the primary driver of secondary-market appreciation in LEGO collecting. LEGO retires sets on a rolling basis, typically 2-4 years after initial release, though highly popular sets may be retired sooner to stimulate demand.
ROI (Return on Investment)
The percentage gain on a LEGO set purchased at retail and sold on the secondary market after retirement. LEGO investment ROI is tracked by dedicated sites and communities. Historically, large D2C and UCS sets have produced strong ROIs 3-5 years after retirement.

S

Set Number
Every official LEGO set has a unique numeric identifier (e.g., 75313 for the AT-AT). Set numbers are the standard way to reference and search for LEGO sets across all marketplaces and databases including BrickLink, Rebrickable, and CollectionPlnr.
Sticker Sheet
A sheet of adhesive stickers used to decorate LEGO bricks in lieu of printed elements. Sticker sheets are a point of contention among collectors - some prefer sets that use printed bricks. An unstickered sticker sheet is desirable for mint condition sets.

T

Technic
LEGO's engineering-focused product line using beams, axles, gears, and sometimes Power Functions/Control+ motors. Technic sets are popular with adult collectors and include large flagship models such as the Bugatti Chiron and Land Rover Defender.

U

UCS (Ultimate Collector Series)
LEGO's most detailed and largest Star Wars sets, designed explicitly for adult display rather than play. UCS sets include the Millennium Falcon (75192, over 7,500 parts), the AT-AT, and various starfighters. UCS sets are among the most invested-in LEGO products and command strong secondary-market premiums after retirement.

V

VIP (Very Important Parts)
LEGO's loyalty rewards programme. VIP points are earned on purchases and can be redeemed for discounts. Some VIP-exclusive offers, including early access to new sets and exclusive GWPs, add collector value to the programme.

W

Wishlist
A LEGO community term for sets a collector wants to acquire. CollectionPlnr lets you track sets you own and sets you want, with pricing data to help you time purchases before retirement.

Additional LEGO Collecting Terms

Exclusive Minifig
A minifigure only available within a specific set or as a promotional item, not available separately through Pick a Brick or other retail channels. Exclusive minifigures from retired sets are among the most traded items in the LEGO secondary market - some individual figures sell for more than the entire set they came from.
System
LEGO System refers to the standard, studded brick building system that forms the basis of most LEGO sets. All System bricks are compatible across all sets produced since 1958, which is a key appeal of LEGO as both a toy and a collectible - parts from a 1960s set physically connect to parts from a 2024 set.
Investor Grade
Sets considered by the LEGO investment community to have strong appreciation potential based on factors including D2C status, high piece count, wide licensed-property appeal, and LEGO's history with similar themes. Investor-grade sets are purchased sealed and stored to sell 3-10 years after retirement.
Collector Edition
A premium LEGO product positioned explicitly at adult collectors, often with higher price points, specialty packaging, and display-focused build experiences. Collector Edition sets fall within the Icons and other adult-targeted lines.
Print Run
The total quantity of a LEGO set manufactured. LEGO does not publicly disclose print run numbers, but limited promotional sets, GWPs, and con exclusives have demonstrably low production quantities that drive secondary-market values.
Bionicle
A discontinued LEGO theme from 2001-2010 (with a brief 2015-2016 return) featuring buildable action figures with unique ball-and-socket parts. Bionicle has an active collector community, and original 2001-era canisters in mint condition are among the most sought-after LEGO collectibles outside the main System line.
Swooshable
Community slang for LEGO sets - especially Star Wars vehicles - well-suited to being picked up and "swooshed" (flown around) as part of play. The term is used affectionately and reflects the dual nature of LEGO as both a toy and a collectible.
BrickHeadz
A LEGO product line featuring stylised, blocky character figures based on licensed properties. BrickHeadz are compact, affordable, and popular with casual collectors who want a display piece without committing to a large or expensive set.
