Dex works out that one of his eyes shows the real world, and the other eye shows the Ectosphere, so he starts to wear an eye patch so he can swap eyes. He learns about the Ectosphere from his mama who's in a mental asylum, and who explains to him that his father was a ghost, and that he should seek him out in the Ectosphere.
