Bandai · 1980 to 1989 · International release

Gunpla: The Original Kits (1980-1989)

Bandai's first Gundam plastic model kits, launched in July 1980 with a 300 yen 1/144 RX-78 Gundam and quickly followed by 1/100 and 1/60 versions, warships, mobile armours and dioramas. The boom carried through the Mobile Suit Variations side range in 1983-84 and the Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Gundam Sentinel, Char's Counterattack and War in the Pocket kits of 1985-89. Early kits are glue-together with simple articulation and few colours; collectors prize first-run boxes and the cheaper Best Mecha Collection numbering on the small kits.

212 toys: 212 model kits, across 12 waves.

Original or reissue?

Bandai has kept many of these moulds in production and reissued them repeatedly, so check box printing and copyright dates to tell an early 1980s run from a later reissue.

Values

Loose and carded or boxed copies are valued separately, from the median asking price of current eBay listings for genuine originals (reproductions, reissues, customs, lots and parts left out). Asking prices, not completed sales.
