How Much Does Pokemon Card Grading Cost?

What Does It Cost to Grade a Pokemon Card?

As of 2026, grading a single Pokemon card costs anywhere from around $17 to $600 or more per card, depending on the grading company you use and the speed of service you select. The three dominant grading services - PSA, CGC, and BGS (Beckett) - each offer a tiered pricing structure where you pay more for a faster turnaround. Understanding these tiers before you submit is essential, because the cost of grading directly affects whether submitting any particular card makes financial sense.

Prices have risen sharply in recent years and continue to change. The figures below reflect the best available information as of mid-2026; always verify current pricing directly on each company's website before submitting.

PSA Grading Costs (as of 2026)

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the market leader in trading card grading, with the highest resale premiums of any service for most Pokemon cards. It also raised prices in February 2026 - the second increase in six months - and temporarily paused its cheapest Value-tier submissions in mid-2026 due to a backlog exceeding 10 million cards.

Service LevelPrice Per CardApprox. TurnaroundDeclared Value Limit
Value Bulk (Collectors Club only)~$25140-160 business days$499
Economy~$5065 business days$499
Regular~$8030 business days$999
Express~$15010-15 business days$2,500
Walk-Through~$6005 business days$10,000

Note that PSA's Value and Value Bulk tiers were paused for new submissions as of June 2026 while PSA works through its backlog. The company has indicated these tiers will reopen, but check psacard.com for the current status before planning a bulk submission.

PSA Membership

A PSA Collectors Club membership (starting at around $20-$25 per year) unlocks the Value Bulk tier and provides a small credit toward grading fees. For collectors submitting more than a handful of cards per year, membership typically pays for itself quickly, though the cheapest tiers are exactly the ones most affected by backlog pauses.

Hidden Fees to Watch For

  • Declared value upcharges - if your card grades higher than its declared value, PSA charges the difference in fee based on the actual value tier.
  • Return shipping - PSA ships returns via insured courier; the shipping cost is added to your invoice and depends on the number of cards and destination.
  • Voucher orders vs. invoiced orders - submitting through a dealer or middleman may include a handling or markup fee on top of PSA's base rate.

CGC Card Grading Costs (as of 2026)

CGC Cards is a strong alternative to PSA, particularly for collectors who do not want to pay an annual membership fee. CGC does not require membership for any tier. In March 2026, CGC updated its Bulk and Economy tiers.

Service LevelPrice Per CardApprox. Turnaround
Bulk~$1790+ business days
Economy~$2080 business days
Standard~$3050 business days
Express~$7515 business days
Super Express~$1505 business days
Walk-Through~$250Same day

CGC also charges add-on fees for sub-grades (+$10 per card), a recognised pedigree designation (+$5 per card), and custom labels (+$8 per card). If you want the detailed centering, corners, edges, and surface breakdown that serious collectors value, budget for the sub-grade fee.

BGS (Beckett) Grading Costs (as of 2026)

Beckett Grading Services includes sub-grades on every card as standard - centering, corners, edges, and surface are each scored separately, making BGS the preferred service for collectors who want that level of transparency. The famous Black Label (a BGS 10 where all four sub-grades are also 10) commands exceptional premiums for ultra-high-grade cards.

Service LevelPrice Per CardApprox. Turnaround
Base~$1575+ business days
Standard~$2520-30 business days
Express~$505-10 business days
Premium~$1002-3 business days
Walk-Through~$250Same day

BGS does not charge extra for sub-grades since they are included in every submission. No annual membership is required.

Which Grading Service Is Right for You?

PSA commands the highest secondary-market premiums for most Pokemon cards, making it the default choice when resale value is the goal. CGC is the most cost-effective option for collectors on a budget who do not want to wait for PSA's cheapest tiers to reopen. BGS is the specialists' choice for pristine raw cards where the sub-grade breakdown matters - particularly vintage holos and modern chase cards targeting Black Label status.

Total Cost: More Than Just the Grading Fee

When calculating the real cost of a grading submission, add up grading fees, any sub-grade or add-on fees, return shipping, and the cost of submission packaging (penny sleeves, toploaders, team bags, and a padded mailer). For a batch of 20 cards submitted to PSA at the Regular tier, total all-in costs can exceed $2,000 once shipping and packaging are included. That math makes the break-even card value clear: each card needs to increase in value by at least the per-card cost after grading to justify the submission.
