Romantic Story #7

Newspaper writer Grace pitches a series about the rehabilitation of a “derelict” from skid row, even though she feels “loathing” for the “unkempt\" men. Volunteering at the “welfare house,” she meets Ray, who seems different. Her feigned concern inspires Ray to clean up and get a job. They fall in love. When Ray learns Grace staged it all for a story, he says he became a bum after his fiancée absconded with his life savings, and now Grace has betrayed him. Ray returns to the streets, discarding the engagement ring he’d bought Grace. Grace writes a sincere story and Ray returns to her.
