Irma and her family move to a small town, where everyone seems friendly; Irma and Gil start going steady. However, the residents don’t know Irma’s father is a German immigrant (who changed his name). When this leaks out, there is a backlash against them. Gil is loyal to Irma, and Standish, the town’s richest man, also stands behind the “foreigner” family. As the story ends, Irma hopes Standish’s influence will triumph over the xenophobic townspeople.
