For four years, Simone has worked for her father as a tally clerk in the capital of British Guiana. When there is a mix-up about a cargo that should have been loaded on an American craft, Simone learns that her father is frightened of a French captain at the wharf. When her father disappears with a note saying he had gone up-country, she and the American captain embark on a difficult journey through the jungle to find him.
