How Pokemon TCG releases work
The Pokemon Trading Card Game runs on a steady rhythm. A main expansion lands roughly every three months, each one a full set of new cards with its own chase rares. Between them come special sets and premium collections, smaller releases built around a theme or anniversary that collectors chase just as hard.
Every expansion arrives in a family of sealed products. Knowing which is which tells you what you are paying for and which ones collectors keep sealed.
- Booster box
- A sealed display of booster packs from one expansion, the classic way to open a set in bulk.
- Elite Trainer Box (ETB)
- Booster packs plus sleeves, dice, energy cards and a storage box. The go-to gift and a favourite to keep sealed.
- Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box
- The Pokemon Center edition of the ETB, with extra booster packs and an exclusive promo card.
- Booster bundle
- A compact pack of boosters with no extras: the cheapest way to rip a handful of packs.
- Collection boxes and premium collections
- Packs bundled with promo cards and often a figure, pin or oversized card. Premium and ultra premium collections sit at the top of the range.

What is a Pokemon TCG prerelease?
A prerelease is an in-store event at local game shops ahead of an expansion's launch, where players open the new set's packs early and play with them.
