Portrait of Katherine
After the death of her parents, Penny goes to live with her aunt in the country. She meets the squire from Manning Close and, although he is much older than her, they soon get married. Lawrence had been married before and had a daughter almost Penny's age. Katie makes it clear to Penny that she hates her presence in the house. Penny worries that Lawrence still loves his first wife and Lawrence worries that Penny feels she is too young for him. Katie tries to frame Penny for the destruction of her mother's portrait. When that doesn't work, she tries to arrange an accident to electrocute Penny.
