Fred walks off in anger and Jill loses him in the fog. She thinks she sees him, but it is someone else. Feeling the urge to talk to someone, she tells the man how they had gone to see Jess Spartan sing at the theatre. Jill tells the man how Fred was twice as good as Jess, but wouldn't sign a contract because he didn't want to throw his current life away. Then the wind clears the fog a little and she realizes she is talking to Jess Spartan. Jess tells her how he had been in Fred's situation once, but success had caused him to drift apart from his girlfriend.
