Following Cromwell's overthrow of Charles I, Hal and Jennet are sent as prisoners to the Americas. On the voyage, Hal joins an uprising of prisoners to take over the ship, but the attempt fails. Hal and a fellow prisoner are marooned on a tiny uninhabited island. As her ship sails away, Jennet thinks there is nothing in store for Hal but a slow death. When the ship reaches Virginia, Jennet's spirit is broken and she agrees to marry the plantation owner where she is forced to work.
