After her father’s death, Paula is raised by her Uncle Ted and his family. Although she’s treated well, Paula is resentful and feels indebted. She meets bus driver Danny and he appears to be interested in her, but she assumes he’s attracted to her cousin Shirley. Paula continues to act in a self-pitying and passive-aggressive manner until she collapses with an illness and her family rallies around her. However, Ted says “you’d rather have your self-created martyrdom than me or your family” and leaves. Paula tracks him down and says she’s changed, so they reconcile.
