Ann stops at Crandel’s motel near Death Valley. While waiting for repairs to her car, she and Jack fall in love. However, Jack won't leave his elderly father to run the motel alone, and Mike won’t leave the desert. Ann convinces Mike that he’s ruining Jack’s life, so Mike pretends he wants Jack to leave. As Ann and Jack depart, Mike sets the motel on fire: Ann rescues him but Jack learns of her scheme and berates her. Ann wanders off into the desert and is saved by Jack. Ann uses her savings to rebuild the motel and will live there with Jack and Mike.
