Phyllis and her Aunt Melissa live in historic Dendrik Manor. Phyllis is attracted to new neighbor Dennis, but he can’t understand her devotion to the “tradition” of the house, which requires constant upkeep that she and her aunt can't afford. Phyllis has to spend much of her time earning money as a singer, and turns down a marriage proposal from Dennis because that would take her away from the Manor. Before she dies, Aunt Melissa urges Phyllis not to waste any more of her life on empty tradition. Phyllis sells Dendrik Manor and is reunited with Dennis.
