Professor Zodiac, charged with murder, tells the court the story of Galio, a 15th Century scholar who discovered the Four Wonders of Alchemy, took the Elixir of Youth to remain young, but saw it wear off in the 20th Century. So he hid the Four Wonders, then went to the JSA to tell them where he had hid the items, which he did before he keeled over dead. However, Zodiac was in another room and overheard the conversation, and rushed out to find the objects, leaving his personal gold cane behind. The JSA realize they must find the objects before Zodiac does.
