Getting a Pokemon card graded is a serious commitment - you're paying for the service, waiting weeks or months, and locking the card in plastic forever. Choosing the wrong grading company for your specific card and goals can cost you real money on resale. Here's what you need to know before you submit.

Why Card Grading Matters for Pokemon

Raw (ungraded) Pokemon cards have a verification problem: buyers can't easily assess condition without handling the card in person. A graded card in a sealed slab solves this. The grade acts as a trusted third-party assessment of the card's condition, and the slab protects the card from further wear.

For high-value Pokemon cards - vintage Base Set, graded 1st Edition holos, modern Special Illustration Rares - grading can dramatically increase the price a buyer is willing to pay. The premium is highest for top-grade copies of sought-after cards. A raw Charizard and a PSA 10 Charizard are practically different products in the market.

PSA: The Market Standard

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) is the largest grading company and the default choice for most Pokemon collectors. PSA grades on a 1-10 scale with no half grades. For Pokemon, the market concentrates around PSA 9 and PSA 10 - these are the grades that see serious collector demand.

PSA 10 (Gem Mint) is the target for high-value cards. The difference in price between a PSA 9 and PSA 10 can be dramatic for popular cards - sometimes three to five times the price or more. PSA 9 (Mint) is still desirable and often the realistic ceiling for older cards that have been handled over the years.

PSA's resale liquidity is unmatched. If you plan to sell, a PSA-graded card will almost always find a buyer faster and at a stronger price than the equivalent BGS or CGC grade. This makes PSA the practical choice for most collectors who may eventually sell.

BGS (Beckett): Strict Grading, Sub-Grades

Beckett Grading Services (BGS) is PSA's closest competitor. BGS grades on a 1-10 scale with half grades, and provides four sub-grades: centering, corners, edges, and surface. A BGS 9.5 Black Label (all four sub-grades at 10) is considered the pinnacle of card grading and commands extraordinary premiums for the right cards.

BGS is generally considered stricter than PSA, which means a BGS 9.5 is often seen as comparable to a PSA 10 by serious collectors. However, the PSA label still tends to command higher prices in the Pokemon market specifically, partly due to volume and brand recognition among buyers.

BGS makes most sense for collectors who want maximum information about their card's condition, or who are targeting the ultra-premium market where a BGS Black Label carries its own cachet.

CGC: The Newcomer With Growing Share

CGC entered the card grading market after dominating comic book grading for years. Their Pokemon grades run 1-10 with half grades, and they use a distinctive blue label. CGC has built a reputation for consistency and their turnaround times have at times been faster than PSA and BGS during peak backlogs.

CGC's resale market is smaller than PSA's but growing. For older, more expensive cards, PSA remains the dominant choice for maximizing resale value. CGC is worth considering for budget-conscious collectors who want a slab, or for cards where you plan to hold long-term and aren't optimizing for immediate liquidity.

Turnaround Times and Cost

Turnaround times fluctuate based on submission volume and the service tier you choose. All three companies offer tiered pricing - economy (slowest, cheapest) to express (fast, expensive). Budget collectors often wait 60-120 days on economy tiers. Express and walk-through services at major shows cost significantly more per card.

For most cards, only submit for grading if the potential graded value meaningfully exceeds the cost of grading plus your time. Low-value commons rarely make economic sense to grade. High-value holos, vintage cards, and modern chase cards are the natural candidates.

Which Should You Choose?

For most Pokemon collectors: PSA. The liquidity advantage on resale is real, and PSA 9/10 labels are what buyers search for. If you specifically want sub-grades and the prestige of a BGS Black Label for your best cards, BGS is a legitimate option. CGC is worth considering if PSA backlogs are extreme and speed matters to you.
