Magic: The Gathering is 30 years old and still the world's most popular trading card game. In those three decades, thousands of cards have been printed across hundreds of sets. But the cards from the original two print runs - Alpha and Beta in 1993 - occupy a completely separate tier of the collector market, and the gap between them and everything else has only widened.

What Are Alpha and Beta?

Alpha and Beta are the first two print runs of Magic: The Gathering, both produced in 1993. Alpha (officially the Limited Edition Alpha) was printed in a run of approximately 2.6 million cards and sold out almost immediately. Beta (Limited Edition Beta) was a larger second print run of around 7.3 million cards that addressed the immediate shortage.

Both sets contain the same 295 cards, including some of the most powerful cards ever printed in Magic - the Power Nine, the dual lands, and many cards that were immediately understood to be broken by competitive standards. Both sets predate any understanding of how to balance a trading card game at scale.

Why Black Borders Matter

All Alpha and Beta cards have black card borders. Starting with Unlimited Edition (the third print run), Magic switched to white borders for reprints of older sets. Black borders became shorthand for original printings and, later, for new set releases (Wizards returned to black borders for expansions starting with Arabian Nights in 1993).

Among serious Magic collectors, black-bordered versions of cards are preferred over white-bordered reprints, even when the card is otherwise identical. The original Alpha or Beta printing of a card carries historical significance that a white-bordered Unlimited version simply does not. For many iconic cards, collectors specifically seek Alpha or Beta copies over any later printing.

How to Tell Alpha from Beta

The clearest visual difference between Alpha and Beta is the card corners. Alpha cards have noticeably more rounded corners than Beta cards - a result of the cutting process used in the first print run. Beta cards have corners that are closer to the standard squared corners of modern Magic cards, though still slightly more rounded than today's cards.

This corner difference means Alpha cards are easier to identify but also more difficult to grade at the highest levels - the rounder corners show wear differently than Beta cards. Some collectors specifically prefer Beta for graded copies because the corner geometry grades more predictably.

The Reserved List

In 1996, Wizards of the Coast created the Reserved List - a promise never to reprint certain cards in a functionally identical form. Many of the most valuable Alpha and Beta cards are on the Reserved List, which means the supply is permanently capped at whatever was printed in 1993. No new copies will ever enter the market.

The Reserved List has been controversial for decades, but it remains in force. For Alpha and Beta cards on the list - including the dual lands and the Power Nine - scarcity is structural and permanent. That's a fundamentally different situation from almost any other collectible, where reprints or new releases can dilute value.

The Most Valuable Cards

Black Lotus is the most famous Magic card and among the most valuable trading cards ever produced. Its power in gameplay and its status as the iconic Magic collectible make high-grade Alpha and Beta copies extremely rare transactions. The Power Nine (Black Lotus, the Moxen, Timetwister, Ancestral Recall, and Time Walk) represent the top tier.

The Alpha and Beta dual lands (Tropical Island, Underground Sea, Volcanic Island, and the rest) are more accessible entry points into original-set collecting. These are on the Reserved List, remain heavily played in Eternal formats of Magic, and have strong demand from both collectors and competitive players.

Collecting Alpha and Beta

Most collectors approach Alpha and Beta through individual iconic cards rather than attempting to complete a set - set completion at any grade level is a project measured in years and significant capital. Focus on specific cards that matter to you, whether for gameplay history, artwork, or investment thesis.

Authentication and grading from PSA or BGS is strongly recommended for any high-value original Magic card. The market for fakes and altered cards is real, and a third-party graded slab provides the verification buyers need to transact confidently.
