Walk into any comic book shop on a Wednesday and you'll see multiple versions of the same issue sitting on the rack. Cover A, Cover B, a 1:10 retailer incentive variant, and sometimes a 1:50 or 1:100 ratio cover. Here is what all of those mean and why some variants become valuable.

What Is a Cover Variant?

A cover variant is a different cover image on the same interior story. The content inside is identical - only the cover artwork changes. Publishers produce multiple covers partly to give collectors something to chase, and partly because multiple covers mean multiple sales from completionist buyers.

A and B Covers

The most common setup. Cover A is the main cover, Cover B is an alternate. Both are typically available at retail at the same price. Many collectors buy both; some only track the A cover as the canonical issue.

Ratio Variants: 1:10, 1:25, 1:50, 1:100

Ratio variants are distributed to retailers based on how many copies of the regular cover they order. A 1:10 variant means the retailer must order 10 copies of the regular issue to receive one copy of the variant. A 1:100 means 100 regular copies per variant copy.

This is why ratio variants command premiums. A 1:100 cover is genuinely scarce - if a retailer orders 50 copies, they get zero ratio covers. Only larger shops ordering 100+ copies receive them. The higher the ratio, the scarcer the variant and typically the higher the secondary market price.

Retailer Exclusive Variants

Some comic shops commission their own exclusive covers from specific artists, available only through their store (in person or online). These are often produced in print runs of 500-3,000 copies and can become highly sought after if the artist becomes prominent or the issue contains a key story moment.

Virgin Covers

A virgin variant removes all trade dress - no title logo, no issue number, no barcode. Just the full artwork without text overlay. These are typically produced in very small quantities as exclusives and are popular with collectors who want the art displayed without cover elements.

What Makes a Variant Valuable?

Low print run plus high demand. Ratio variants have guaranteed scarcity. Retailer exclusives with small print runs can become valuable if demand materializes. Early appearances of characters who go on to major media moments are the most reliably valuable variants.
